The development objectives of the Bukhara and Samarkand Water Supply Project are:
- To improve the quality, reliability, efficiency, financial viability
and sustainability of the water supply and waste water services in Bukhara and Samarkand. This objective would be achieved through: (a) rehabilitation and efficiency improvements of existing facilities; (b) transfer of the management and operation of the Bukhara and Samarkand water and wastewater enterprises (vodokanals) to a private utility operator under a management contract arrangement; and (c) strengthening institutional and financial capacity in the vodokanals of Bukhara and Samarkand; and
- To reduce the negative impact of the existing water distribution system and the lack of wastewater and drainage systems on the cultural heritage patrimony of Bukhara and Samarkand
